If you’ve ever grown vegetables in a home garden, you’ve undoubtedly encountered an infestation of pests or suffered a bacterial/fungal problem with your soil. The first thing you do is ask Google how to solve a certain pest or fungal problem and the resulting search returns a lot of recommendations for pesticides, fungicides, or bactericides. If you’ve ever used any of these products, you must have realized that it is harmful for humans while applying it to your garden. At the end of this, you probably didn’t even harvest your vegetables and told yourself you’ll never use pesticides or fungicides ever again.

Safe To Eat

Yet when you head into your local market or supermarket, you gleefully buy any of the available vegetables that are nicely packaged or arranged. You tend not to think about whether the vegetables you’re buying has been sprayed, how often, in what dosage quantities, and the most recent application. It’s almost as if you assume the vegetables have zero pesticides applied throughout its growth cycle but you ensure that you give your vegetables a short rinse before consuming or cooking.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

How is it then that when you apply pesticides yourself, you won’t consume your own vegetables but if you buy vegetables on the store shelf, you would consume them? Would it be fair to say that if you witnessed your farmer spraying vegetables with pesticides, you no longer would purchase them in the market?

The Ugly Truth

The ugly truth about commercial vegetables production is that pesticides and fungicides are used widely in the growing season. You may not realize it, but when you see a beautiful vegetable without scars, scabs, or cuts, the farmer had to apply copious amounts of nasty chemicals to keep them that way. Understandably, farmers have to stay competitive and cannot risk a damaged crop. But in the meantime, the use of pesticides and fungicides have contributed to the degradation of soil quality leading to the need to use more fertilizers and more pesticides and fungicides. Great news for fertilizer manufacturers and chemical companies, but bad news for farmers, consumers, and the environment.

Responsible Farming

We have thought long and hard about how to produce vegetables responsibly and sustainably. Our greenhouse systems and methods were set up to foster the regenerative capabilities of the growing media, water collection and consumption, and energy harvesting while also developed to sustain the human effort. While an enclosed greenhouse environment may not guarantee against an infestation of pests and fungal outbreaks, a healthy plant with strong nutrition profiles resulting in strong defense resistance has a better ability to ward off pests and stave off bacterial/fungal pathogens. We dislike the use of pesticides and fungicides just as much as the home garden grower and above all, we eat our own produce – which a lot of farmers using pesticides do not do.
